In August 1, 2005, Sgt Casara deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On August 22, 2005, Sgt Casara’s unit deployed to South Baghdad, Iraq; Sgt Casara was assigned the additional duties as Personnel NCO. On September 23, 2005, Sgt Casara’s fully tracked M113 armed personnel carrier rolled over an anti-tank mine that set off an explosion. The explosion flipped his vehicle over, killing two and injuring four. Sgt. Casara suffered bilateral fractures to his right tibia and fibula, a shattered left tibia, shattered heel and ankle bones to both feet, and a dislocated right hip. Sgt Casara was flown to Landstul, Germany, and was hospitalized for about one week.
Sgt Casara has been included by President George W. Bush in his book, “Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors”.
