Devils Backbone Brewing Company won Small Brewing Company and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year at the  2013 Great American Beer Festival this past weekend, the largest brewing competition in the United States. Devils Backbone successfully defended their 2012 Small Brew Pub and Small Brew Pub Brewer of the Year at the festival and in 2010 the company won the Small Brewpub award at the World Beer Cup, the world’s largest beer competition. “The third national title in four years is a little unreal. It is stunning to be among the amazing array of renowned national craft brewers” said Steve Crandall founder of Devils Backbone Brewing Company. In addition to the national title Devils Backbone brought home six more medals at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival to add to their collection.

Devils Backbone was awarded Gold –Old Virginia Dark Lager, (American-Style Dark Lager category),

For the second year in a row Devils Backbone has won more medals at the Great American Beer Festival than any other brewery in the country.

“When the announcement for the Small Brewing Company of the year award started with “This brewery proves that Virginia is for beer lovers…” I knew we had it and what a total shock to the system!  It wasn’t until I went back into the festival hall and saw the thousands of beer lovers with hundreds of fellow brewers, did the enormity of it all really sink in!”, said Jason Oliver, Brewmaster.

Since opening the Devils Backbone “Basecamp” Brewpub in 2008 at the base of Wintergreen Mountain in Nelson County, followed by their Devils Backbone “Outpost” Production Facility in 2011 in Lexington, VA, the company has been known for their consistent quality and award winning beers which has propelled Devils Backbone into a leadership roll within craft beer nationally.  Their prestigious collection of nationally recognized medals & awards included twenty-three Great American Festival medals, five World Beer Cup awards and nine Virginia Craft Brewers Fest medals with two consecutive “Best of Show” titles.
